The Fourth Tradition states that each CMA group should be autonomous, except in matters affecting CMA as a whole -- thats where the "Intergroup" comes in.

In the South Florida area, South Florida CMA is the Intergroup.

What Officer positions does South Florida CMA have?

Currently, South Florida CMA has a Chair, a Secretary, and a Treasurer.

What other positions does South Florida CMA have?

South Florida CMA currently has Chair positions for the following committees and can create other committees as needed:

         Hospitals and Institutions

         Literature

         Public Information

         Structure and Finance

Officers and Chairs are elected by the voting body of South Florida CMA and serve for one year. Any South Florida CMA member having a minimum recovery time of one year can serve as an Officer or Chair.

What is a GSR?

GSR stands for "Group Service Representative." A GSR is the link between a CMA group or meeting and South Florida CMA.   A GSR and Alternate Group Service Rep (GSA) are elected by their individual groups.

The GSR has two main responsibilities:

- Represent a group at South Florida CMA meetings by participating in discussion, bringing up any concerns and voting the groups conscience on issues brought to vote.

- Report back to their group decisions and votes made at South Florida CMA meetings as well as any information needing to be passed along from CMA World Services

How does a GSR report back to their group?

GSRs give updates about South Florida CMA at a groups business meetings. They can also provide necessary information about South Florida CMA activities and resources during "any CMA related announcements" portion of any CMA meeting.

What are the requirements to be a GSR?

The recovery time requirement for a GSR is decided by each group.  However, South Florida CMA advises to elect someone with a minimum of six months and preferably one year.  It is also recommended that GSRs serve for one year in order to have continuity in South Florida CMA.

What is an alternate GSR?

Some groups have an Alternate GSR called a GSA. If the GSR is unable to attend a South Florida CMA meeting or a groups business meeting, the GSA should attend in their absence.  GSAs are also encouraged to attend South Florida CMA meetings, but each group gets only one vote.

How can a GSR know their groups conscience?

GSRs are not expected to consult their groups on every single matter. For most South Florida CMA matters, the Rep should feel entrusted to vote their individual conscience. If a matter requires tabling to a future date in order for additional perspective and decisions to be obtained from the individual groups, then the GSR is responsible to present the issue at its next group business meeting and then vote on the matter based on their groups decision at the following South Florida CMA business meeting.

What happens at South Florida CMA meetings?

The Secretary calls the role to see if there is a quorum. The treasurer reports on our finances. The members hear old business. The  committee Chairs give their reports. The group discusses any new business.

What is the voting structure of South Florida CMA?

A quorum is required to conduct any business. Over fifty percent of voting positions must be present to have a quorum. Motions require a two-thirds majority to pass.

Who can attend South Florida CMA meetings?

South Florida CMA meetings are open to all CMA members.  However, only Officers, Committee Chairs and a Group Service Rep (GSR) or Alternate Group Service Rep (GSA) are voting members.

Why have an Intergroup?

To further carry the message to addicts outside of meetings

To assist individual CMA meetings and groups with any Twelve Traditions questions and concerns

To provide resources to individual meetings and groups such as pamphlets, newsletters,  chips and the website

To represent South Florida CMA to CMA World Services

What does Intergroup do?

Intergroup (South Florida CMA) handles tasks that one group working alone would normally not be able to do effectively, such as:

Maintain and distribute meeting lists for South Florida

Create CMA literature such as a newsletter and pamphlets

         Field press and media inquiries

         Maintain a website

Maintain a clearinghouse of recovery literature and chips

Provide information to and coordinate speaking engagements for area hospitals and institutions

Represent South Florida CMA to CMA General Services, the World Intergroup

What does Intergroup not do?

Going along with the Fourth tradition, South Florida CMA does not make decisions for individual groups and allows each to maintain autonomy.
